Najib croons to TNB staff, offers them array of goodies

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak today sought to engage another niche group ahead of looming polls - this time by singing Janji Ditepati to the men and women of Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) and offering them an array of goodies.

Among the promises that had been fulfilled, Najib said, was his pledge to appoint TNB's leadership from within its own ranks.

NONE“When the time came for a transition of TNB’s top management, I told the leaders of TNB’s associations if there is someone from within TNB who could become the chief executive, I would appoint him.

“That is why when we chose the theme ‘Janji Ditepati’, I have fulfilled my promise to the staff of TNB,” he said in reference to the recent appointment of Azman Mohd as TNB’s new CEO.

The premier also announced to some 5,000 staff members at the TNB event that the company would be the first government-linked company to increase the retirement age to 60.

“TNB will also increase its contribution to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) for TNB staff members who continue to serve between the age of 56 and 60... This is to ensure that there will be sufficient EPF savings for the TNB workers when they retire,” he said.

In addition, new TNB workers starting from this month would also be covered by the Social Security Organisation (Socso).
He urged TNB’s management to consider working with the 1Malaysia People’s Housing (PR1MA) project for the benefit of its staff, but did not disclose further details.

‘Najib’s hand of gold’

Earlier, Najib, accompanied by his wife Rosmah Mansor, were met with cheers as he alighted from his vehicle, clad in TNB’s official blue jacket.

A TNB staff member even approached Najib to slip him a note, which the premier subsequently read out at the TNB’s 63rd anniversary event which was also telecast to some 24,000 TNB staff nationwide.

“She wrote with her own hand: ‘PM, I like you - lucky she didn’t say I love you’,” quipped Najib as the crowd let out a “Wahoooo”.

He continued reading: “I like you because you are great. Everything you touch turns to gold. Janji Ditepati. Amin.”

The premier, however, declined to read out the name signed on the note.

Najib said he felt touched by the attempts of TNB staff members to connect with him on a personal level, adding that this was evidence that they were behind the government.

He further noted his special relationship with TNB as his first job in the government was as deputy energy, telecommunications and posts minister in 1978.

“I am also very excited and pumped because I was welcomed by a blue wave this evening. I must also admit that I like blue very much,” he said in reference to the similar colours of TNB and the BN.

Najib sang praises for TNB’s ability in providing a reliable supply of energy, particularly for industries, and urged the company to further build on its achievements.

“I hope TNB can continue to shine and that it will continue to excel in the next 60 years to become ahead of its time,” he said.
