MCA's latest anti-hudud DRIVEL: Liow latches on to RAPE cases to show 'injustice'

MCA's latest anti-hudud DRIVEL: Liow latches on to RAPE cases to show 'injustice'
Despite only 14 per cent of Chinese respondents in a survey disagreeing that Islamic criminal laws, or hudud, would be fair to all, MCA deputy president Liow Tiong Lai said non-Muslims would not get justice and defended Malaysia's current laws as "very complete".
Liow said that under Islamic laws, a rape victim would be required to get four witnesses to vouch that she had been raped.
“So they [non-Muslims] have doubt that they can get a fair deal through the (hudud) system. We are confident that the rakyat as a whole, regardless of race or religion, has confidence in the judiciary,” MCA mouthpiece The Star quoted him as saying.
Liow made the claim despite the fact that the requirement for four credible witnesses only applies in the case of accusation of adultery, and not for rape, a crime which does not come under hudud punishment. Rape under Islamic law is classified as a separate crime of violence similar to armed robbery, and subjected to other sub-categories of the Islamic penal code.
Liow was responding to the survey by University of Malaya Centre for Democracy and Elections carried out earlier this month, which among others found that 42 per cent of Chinese respondents answering 'yes' when asked whether they thought hudud laws would ensure justice for all. About a quarter of them replied they were unsure, while 14 per cent answered 'no'.
Asked whether the implementation of hudud could be a solution to widespread crime, 41 per cent of Chinese respondents agreed while some 32% were not sure.
The findings come amid MCA's continuous attacks on DAP for its alliance with PAS in Pakatan Rakyat. The Chinese-only party has spearheaded an anti-hudud campaign through public forums and its party-controlled media, following the PAS-led Kelantan government's move to introduce hudud laws on Muslims in the state.
"Why has DAP in general remained silent when there is a chance to refute? Does this not prove that DAP condones PAS’ goal to implement their theocratic state?" asked MCA in its latest anti-hudud statement released by Tee Siew Kiong, its national organising secretary.
Some 1,536 people, represented by various races in proportion to the country's population, were interviewed face-to-face in the UMCEDEL survey. More than half (56%) were youths aged between 21 to 40 years, and all of them were registered voters, 26 per cent of whom will cast their votes for the first time at the coming polls.
