Ismail Sabri: I did not interfere

Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob denies interfering with investigations or pre-empting the Attorney-General in the Suaram investigations.
PETALING JAYA: Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob today lashed out at Suaram for lodging multiple police reports against him, saying that the human rights NGO had “no locus standi” to accuse him of abusing his powers.
“What do you mean interfering? I did not stop the investigation. The investigation by Companies Commission of Malaysia (CCM) was according to the Companies Act 1965,” he told FMT .
The Bera MP insisted that he had no powers to interfere with the decision-making process of the Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail to prosecute, as alleged by Suaram today, and CCM was merely carrying out its routine duties.
“It’s a normal investigation by CCM with other companies without my directive . I have no power of prosecution and that’s why my statement said that CCM has completed its investigation and will hand over its proposal to the AG and the final say is with the AG.”
“Today’s newspaper carried news stating that the AG asked CCM to conduct further investigation. So it shows I have no power for prosecution,” said Ismail Sabri.
Describing the police reports being made today as “baseless”, he also said that Suaram has no legal standing (locus standi) to lodge reports as it does not even exist as a legal body.
“I think the reports are baseless. Moreover, who lodged the report? Suaram? What locus standi Suaram has? It is not even registered. Its staff? Its members? How could Suaram have staff? Or members? Suaram is an unregistered body. So legally Suaram does not even exist,” he said.
Earlier this morning, Suaram and several of its supporters lodged police reports against Ismail Sabri, alleging that he abused his powers by “interfering” in the investigations against Suaram by CCM.
