Hisham turns Aunt Sally at PKR's Johor dinner

Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein became the target of criticism during PKR's largest ever dinner at Skudai, Johor last night, for his statement that the government need not guarantee the safety of the PKR entourage in the southern state.
Describing the statement as clearly displaying " arrogance of power", PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim (below) accused Hishammuddin of failing to discipline his supporters.

"You are working for the people, not the party, this is clearly arrogance of power.

"This is one Malaysia two laws, one for Umno and the rich, and one for the people," he said, referring to the arrest of a 19-year-old girl for allegedly stepping on prime minister's photograph during a Merdeka eve rally.

Yesterday Anwar and PKR leaders were on a day's tour of Johor in a symbolic double-decker campaign bus, meeting supporters and people in Tangkak, Muar, Batu Pahat and Skudai.

The bus was splashed with red paint for the third time, while Anwar was performing Friday prayers at a Tangkak mosque.

Just before reaching their dinner destination, a stone was allegedly thrown at the entourage from a pedestrian bridge and the road was strewn with nails.

Setting record in BN heartland

The historic fund-raising event was the largest ever opposition dinner organised in Johor, the stronghold of the BN.

It was held at a large outdoor car park in Skudai, one of the six opposition state seats in Johor.

However, the attendance was still unprecedented in the state over which the BN ,especially Umno, exercise a strong grip.

The emcee announced that the dinner raised around RM19,000 for the party's fund.

Earlier PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu said Hishammuddin's statement had given the green light for hooliganism.

"It shows that the home minister had issued a permit to hooligans, allowing them to have their way in Malaysia.
"We must pull him down before the next general election," said the charismatic leader, popularly known as Mat Sabu.

PKR vice-president N Surendran slammed Hishammuddin for his ignorance of a home minister's responsibilities which is to protect citizens.

"For Chinese, red represents prosperity, right? This means we will win (the general election)," she said, tongue-in-cheek.

"(I was thinking) why is the BN doing this to us? (I knew the answer) when I reached here (and saw so many people). They know they are going to lose power," she added.

Other leaders who spoke at the dinner included Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim, PAS vice-president and Kubang Kerian MP Salahuddin Ayub who has decided to contest in Johor in the coming polls, and Johor DAP chief Dr Boo Cheng Hau.
