Foreign funding: Ministers who are ignoramuses

YOURSAY 'The statement from the UN special rapporteur makes a mockery of our foreign minister and domestic trade, cooperatives and consumerism minister.'

NGOs can receive foreign funding, says UN rep

your sayAnonymous #10786680: The present government we have is populated with ministers who are either incompetent, fools and ignoramuses, or they are intentionally digging their feet in to remain in power, doing everything within their power to remain entrenched in their leadership positions. I think it is the latter.

Nobody can be so blatantly one-sided in the application of the law unless they have dark hidden secrets to protect and are desperate to prevent their disclosure.

Timothy: United Nations Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association Maina Kiai, here is our Malaysian uniqueness. Everything (right or wrong) will be legal as long as the individual or groups work for the current regime.

On the other hand, if it is against or perceived to be against the current regime, everything will be considered illegal, including what colour T-shirt you wear, how you shake or show your butt, where and who you throw your shoes at, whose pictures you urinate or stomp on and whose 'can of worms' you open, not to mention the issue of funding.

Keturunan Malaysia: Maina Kiai, it is not that we do not have enough good laws or knowledge of the same, it is because we have bad people in power who know good laws but choose not to practice them if and when that suits their purpose.

Starr: The statement from the UN special rapporteur makes a mockery of our foreign affairs minister and domestic trade, cooperatives and consumerism minister.

Their respective statements to query Suaram's foreign funding sources are indeed "highly suspicious", especially in the manner they questioned Suaram.

Besides, their capability as ministers in the Najib cabinet is also "highly questionable" as they raised suspicion on Suaram's source of revenue without just and reasonable cause.

R Subra Pinang: Our current (so-called) leaders are going around the world boasting that our country is well governed and going in the right direction, and we are economically successful and peaceful.

Now Kenyan Maina Kiai should tell the whole world the bunch of wolves in sheep skin that we have, whose ultimate aim is to destroy this nation.

ABU Member: The government's action against Suaram bears testimony of how corrupt this country is. Here corruption exists in broad daylight like nobody's business but if you complain, you will be investigated instead.

The former PM admitted recently that we are being ruled by the "devils" but he got the audacity to say that this is still better than being ruled by the "unknown angels".

Anonymous_3e21: Getting funding from the "devils you know" is okay. The problem is Suaram is getting financial help from the "angels", and that's why the devil is very angry.

Dingy: There is no stopping the French investigation on Scorpene submarine corruption that involved PM Najib Razak. With more than a decade in the Defence Ministry, how much wealth had he accumulated from the military modernisation programme?

Apa Ini?: I believe CAP (Consumer Association of Penang) - a very much respected NGO - has received foreign funding for decades and no one is surprised or has ever objected to it. Now, why is that?

What about all the other worthy NGOs? Is foreign funding illegal? Perhaps it's time to investigate and charge all the NGOs which are funded by Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, etc.

Dr David KL Quek: So is this UN rep also a foreign lackey interfering in the domestic affairs of Malaysia? The authorities-that-be just cannot simply have their cake and eat it too.

Selective prosecution is becoming the norm of a bankrupt authority which has seemingly lost its moral compass and is simply clutching at flimsy straws to try and intimidate anyone who dares challenge the foibles and failures of a declining and decrepit institution.

2zzzxxx: The fact is this - you cannot receive any funding when you're digging dirty secrets from under the filthy carpet of Umno's untouchables.
CCM to file up to five charges against Suaram

LittleGiant: Ismail Sabri Yaakob, the domestic trade, cooperatives and consumerism minister, and the Companies Commission of Malaysia (CCM) can say and do whatever they want to drag Suaram (Suara Inisiatif) to the courts.

If the courts find that Suaram had actually conducted its functions in breach of the Companies Act, then Suaram is liable to face the consequences.

But for the minister to say that the action taken against Suaram was not politically motivated is really laughable and just not acceptable. No Malaysian, in his or her right frame of mind, would be willing to believe these kind of statements.

Freemsia: Here we go again, the whistleblower is being targeted. And this is not politically motivated?

Trying To Be Smart: Personally, I think Ismail Sabri should seriously consider what offence of substance Suara Inisiatif had committed before deciding to charge the company in court.

Do remember, company law is the domain of specialists and it may be wise to consult the best of them. Any wrong move and all the good that our PM is doing to gain back investors' confidence in government will be destroyed in one fell swoop.

Above all, it is wise to ask the question whether those supposed infractions of the law that Suara Inisiatif may have committed are serious enough to be brought to court or whether a reprimand would be adequate.

Conmen: Let's be clear: The charges against Suaram are for the purpose of silencing the NGO in pursuing the French court case on the Scorpene submarines scandal that had ultimately lead to the murder of Mongolian interpreter Altantuya Shaariibuu.

So it is better to destroy Suaram to ensure that it will have no means to pursue the case in Paris. One wonders other than Suaram, can another body take over the case from Suaram, like for example the Bar Council.

I have little confidence that Suaram is able to survive this ordeal if Umno-BN is hell bent on stopping them.

Even if they lose big in GE13, they will still cling on to power and do all sorts of funny business to stay in control - that's for sure.

Quigonbond: It's funny. The real Scorpene action isn't happening in Malaysia. It's happening in France. Even if CCM dissolves Suaram, another will rise in its place and take over the activism.

The PM can never win this one, and the facts on corruption will be eventually exposed. - Malaysiakini
