3 police teams to investigate various N-Day incidents

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 2 — Three special teams have been set up by police to investigate three reports involving incidents at Dataran Merdeka, an attack on the People’s Independence Tour bus and on the contravention of the Peaceful Gathering Act 2011 by the organisers of “Himpunan Janji Bersih”.
Bukit Aman CID director Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Zinin said on the first incident that took place during Merdeka Eve celebrations at Dataran Merdeka, police urge those involved in displaying the alternative flag to come forward and help with investigations.
He said police also urged those involved in stepping on the pictures of national leaders and showing their buttocks to come forward and give their statement to the police.
“We have set up the special teams to investigate three incidents that took place during the celebration and based on pictures published by the media. We ask that the individuals involved come forward to give their statement.
“If they fail to do so, we will hunt them down and act against them based on the existing law,” he told a press conference at the Dang Wangi police contingent headquarters here, today.
Mohd Bakri said the action of a few individuals who tried to provoke the crowd at the Merdeka Eve celebrations could threaten the country’s peace and harmony.
He said the exhibiting of a new flag to allegedly replace the Malaysian flag was being investigated under Section 4(1)(a) of the Sedition Act 1948, and the incident in which the pictures of national leaders were stepped on, under Sections 290 and 504 of the Penal Code.
He said the incident in which the buttocks were shown towards the pictures of national leaders was being investigated under Section 509 of the Penal Code.
On a police report lodged at the Tun H. S. Lee police station on August 29, Mohd Bakri said police were investigating the failure of the organisers of “Himpunan Janji Bersih” to give due notice of the gathering on August 30.
Police want the organisers to come forward to facilitate investigations.
Under the Peaceful Gathering Act 2011, the organisers should have given 10 days’ notice before holding a gathering.
Meanwhile, police have recorded statements from five witnesses, including a bus driver, on the splashing of paint on a bus belonging to the opposition in Kota Bharu, yesterday.
Mohd Bakri said the case was being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for vandalism, and police urged those with information on the incident to contact the nearest police station. — Bernama
